    BIOGRAPHY

    The Early Years
    A life of medicine

Dr Wong comes from an active family background of weekend jungle trekking across various tropical jungle, mountains of Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia and Borneo.

Coupled with a penchant for environmental photography; sketching, love of the natural outdoors & fascination with all things technical, these various aspects formed an early fertile bedrock of imagination of lost cities, overgrown civilizations and airships.

Subsequently, a vocation in Medicine beckoned and Dr. Wong read medicine at the University of Sheffield, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and graduated with a MBChB in 2001.

As a junior doctor in training, Dr Wong developed a love for combining the fantastical, technical and futuristic and this was often expressed in the form of rudimentary sketches, schematics and designs.

    Creative Vision
    In pursuit of art...

With the advent of the digital tablet and Photoshop, the call of art beckoned.

As a self taught artist, a diverse diet of far eastern influences formed the basis of Dr Wong's art education. This included a range of Japanese art & design, animation and games; notably the one man army Hayao Miyazaki (famed producer, director, animator, storyteller, illustrator, writer and artist) and the evocative architectural landscapes of lesser known Joseph Gandy.

Dr Wong subsequently produced conceptual work and illustrations for various developers including: US developer Arcane Development on the MMO Archaean: Massive Online World; US developer St. Studios and notably as Senior Concept Artist for independent space MMO Infinity: The Quest For Earth prior to founding London entertainment & visual design agency, Opus Artz Ltd.

His credentials include Bioshock 2, Dead Space franchise, Shadowrun and Edge of Twilight.

    Q & A

    Artist Interview

Where do you get your inspiration?

In the early years of learning the ropes, I would have quoted: Hayao Miyazaki, Syd Mead, John Berkey, Joseph Gandy, James Gurney, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Shoji Kawamori, Yutaka Izubuchi and Kunio Okawara as strong influences.

These days, I would relate with everyday surroundings such as the falloff of a neon lamp across a narrow wet alley, the definition of form in light and shadow, the night jungle sounds atop a high mountain pass, the roar of waves below a jagged cliff, and the saturated reflected sunlight onto skin.

What is your essential art kit?

Pilot C4 Pen, imagination and a blank piece of surface (paper, canvas or wall will do nicely!)

What is key to developing as an artist?

Observation, analysis, thirst for knowledge - of how things function, their constituent parts, surface materials and texture and applying these aspects of information, theory, and creative intuition into some semblance of shape, form and art.

What valuable lessons have you learnt?

An artist's life is essentially simple. One need only Eat, Sleep or Paint, Shoots & Leaves

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?

Art is a lifestyle. So a optimal work-life balance is essential to follow your bliss.
